The Data Protection Act 2012 established the Data Protection Commission (DPC) to protect the privacy of individual and personal data. The DPC’s statutory powers, functions and duties derive from the Data Protection Act 2012 (Act 843) and the Constitution of Ghana 1992.
Using its statutory powers, the Data Protection Commission:
- Raises awareness of data protection as a fundamental human right amongst members of the public.
- Supports Data Controllers to comply with data protection legislation and implement appropriate policies, procedures and processes.


- Keeps and maintains an up-to-date register of Data Controllers
- Examines complaints from the public with regard to alleged infringements of the data protection law
- Conducts investigations into complaints under the Act, determines it in a manner the Commission considers fair and takes enforcement action where necessary
- Delivers Privacy Practitioner training and supports the establishment and operationalisation of the National Privacy Practitioner Association
- Provides thought leadership, African representation and cooperation with the international data protection community.
Data Protection
We regulate and enforce compliance with Ghana’s Data Protection Act 2012 (Act 843) to ensure organisations and individuals handle personal data responsibly. Our work includes:
- Educating data controllers and processors on legal obligations.
- Investigating breaches and enforcing data protection laws.
- Providing guidance on securing personal and organisational data.
Technology & Ethics
As technology evolves, so do ethical considerations in data protection. DPC promotes responsible use of technology by:

- Advising on ethical AI, cybersecurity, and digital privacy.
- Establishing guidelines on emerging technologies and data ethics.
- Ensuring organisations adopt fair and transparent data processing practices.
Accreditation & Certification
We offer certification and accreditation to organisations to uphold data protection standards, including:
- Training and certifying Data Protection Supervisors.
- Accrediting institutions for compliance audits and assessments.
- Setting benchmarks for data security best practices.
Research, Monitoring & Evaluation
We conduct research and monitor compliance to strengthen Ghana’s data protection framework. Our focus includes:
- Analysing national and global data protection trends.
- Evaluating compliance levels and recommending policy improvements.
- Assessing the impact of data privacy regulations on businesses and individuals.
